Up for sale is a super rare 1985 BMW 524TD. BMW only sold this car in the states for 2 years with the turbo diesel m21 engine and there were very few sold. Of the ones left on the road, its extremely uncommon to find one with low miles, original paint and in good working mechanical condition. This car runs and drives excellent, has a CLEAN CALIFORINIA TITLE with current registration, ice cold A/C, and is ready to be driven.
Mechanically the car is in great shape for its age. The car will start up instantly hot or cold. The injection pump works properly and does not leak at all. It idles good, stays cool and has plenty of power, the turbo has no shaft play. The transmission shifts perfectly. The car has under 105k miles. Recent maintenance includes :
-Timing belt service done professionally at a very reputable independent BMW shop
– New water pump and thermostat
– New OEM radiator (specific to the 524TD $400.00 ) and new radiator hoses
– New fan clutch
– New glow plugs
– Valve adjustment and valve cover gasket
– New suspension bushings
– New Interstate battery
And many other little items to get the car well sorted
Interior is in very good shape for its age with the exception of the usual cracked dash, the seats are not ripped, carpet and headliner are good and it has the factory floor mats still. Most everything functions properly electrically, all the windows, lights, switches, A/C and heat, central locking system etc.. work. All the gauges work properly with the exception of the temp gauge, which works only when it feels like it. It also has a nice upgraded Blaupunkt radio installed
The exterior of the car wears all original Bronzit paint. Though it is faded and has a few dings and dents, it allows you to see that the car has never had any paint work or accident damage ever in its life, as far as e28 chassis cars go this is one of the straightest original ones you could start with. It is a true low mile, rust free 2 owner car. The undercarriage and engine bay is just as clean.
The car sits on a fully refinished set of staggered 16” BBS RZ wheels with new front and rear tires. It also has an authentic M-tech 1 rear spoiler
Things that it could use :
– drivers side rear door inside handle is not working
– cracked fog light lenses
– squeaky brakes, brakes work great though
Being that it is diesel, it never needs to be smogged, which is a plus for diesel enthusiasts, and also for a BMW enthusiast looking to build up an e28 and do a motor swap, and if you wish to convert it to a manual transmission everything is basically the same as any other e28. Just a side note, BMW only offered this car in the united states with an automatic transmission. I have tried my best to describe it, please keep in mind that this is a 33 year old car. I realize regular e28’s can be found cheaper but well sorted 524 turbo diesel models rarely come up for sale. I would like to see it go to someone that appreciates the oddity of the car.
