“With the K5 Blazer, GM created a 4×4 that joined, but also changed, the SUV segment itself.” –Motor Trend, December 2020

Highlighting the Blazer’s historic launch as “full-sized,” a slap at the then-smaller Ford Bronco, Chevrolet’s 1988 promotional brochure put it this way: “The Full-Size Blazer has quite a heritage-one which began in 1969 when Blazer emerged as America’s original full-size sport utility vehicle. Many model years later, it is still the ideal vehicle for the adventurer who really wants to go off into the horizon.”

Offered here is a well-maintained, lightly upgraded “Heartbeat of America” ’88 Blazer in dark blue over blue. Delivered new at Herlong Pontiac-Chevrolet-Buick in Johnston, South Carolina, the truck’s odometer now shows 27,518 miles, but due to the Blazer’s odometer’s 5-digit limitation (and based on the Carfax history showing 100,742 miles in 2016), the actual mileage is likely 127,518. At this level, the truck has traveled fewer than 4,000 miles per-year on average since new. The Carfax history also shows a minor-damage incident seven years ago, the result of a rear-ending by another vehicle. Any damage has long since been fully and professionally repaired leaving no sign of the damage or the repair. The Blazer’s original window sticker-showing the truck’s extensive options list as well as its standard equipment-is included in the sale and shown in the accompanying gallery.

The factory original exterior Midnight Blue Solid metallic paint is evenly applied and uniformly glossy, and retains a showroom-new appearance. The boy-color-painted fiberglass roof is unblemished. Metal trim-including the chrome bumpers, grille-surround, door handles, and mirrors-is in excellent condition. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) All factory-applied emblems are in place and properly mounted; the gold Chevrolet “bowtie” grille logo is perfect. Cabin glass (including sliding tinted side-glass on the fiberglass top) and all lighting lenses are clear and free of damage. Steel wheels with chrome trim rings and “4×4” center emblems are mounted with BFGoodrich® All-Terrain T/A 33×10.5 LT tires. A mild lift kit is installed.

Inside, the dark-blue upholstery (velour cloth in front, vinyl on the rear bench seat) has been maintained in excellent condition. There are no signs of abuse and only very light, normal wear on the driver’s seat; there are no rips or tears. The matching premium door trim (featuring power-window controls) has likewise been beautifully maintained, one reliable indication of prior-owner care. The well-maintained, medium-blue carpeting (and protective rubber mats) in the cabin and cargo area, and the absence of wear on the door sill step-over areas also speak to owner care. The dashboard (with matching blue cover), framed by the Chevrolet-branded steering wheel common to the brand’s full-size trucks, includes the standard array of instruments and engine-monitoring gauges, set in a brushed-metal surround. (An Equus® engine-coolant-temperature gauge is mounted below the dash.) The brushed-metal trim continues across the dash to the passenger side where a “Silverado” emblem is mounted in the factory-correct position. The automatic-transmission shifter is positioned on the steering column while the four-wheel-drive transfer-case control lever is floor-mounted. Factory air-conditioning and heating controls are slide-lever-operated, and an aftermarket, premium JVC® audio head unit is installed in place of the factory radio. A lockable storage compartment with cupholders is located between the front seats.

Under the hood, the factory 5.7-liter V8 fuel-injected engine has been maintained in stock condition with no add-on cosmetic bits. The engine compartment is clean with all components-including air conditioning-and “plumbing” properly installed/routed. Underneath the truck, there is no evidence of abuse or too-aggressive off-road driving; no obvious dents or bent components. Expected surface rust is confined to untreated metal. The full-length dual-exhaust system is a visual focal point.
